A chest enlargement operation (also known as a “boob job”) is a cosmetic surgery procedure that can make your breasts bigger or change their shape. It is a major surgery, and you need to think carefully about why you want it. It’s also expensive, and the results aren’t guaranteed.
You can have a chest enlargement operation by using fat from another part of your body or by surgically inserting an implant. Most people have the latter option, because it gives more control over the size of your breasts. You’ll usually have the surgery under general anaesthesia, so you’ll be asleep.
Before the surgery, you’ll meet with a doctor who will check that you’re fit for it. You’ll be told how to prepare for the surgery and what to expect.
Your surgeon will make a cut, called an incision, in your breast tissue or under the muscle of your chest wall, (pectoral muscle). This creates a pocket for an implant. The doctor can put in a saline or silicone implant, which are soft plastic shells filled with sterile salt water or a gel.

After the operation, you’ll need to wear a supportive bra for at least 6 weeks. You’ll also need to avoid activities that raise your blood pressure, such as exercise and physical exertion. It’s recommended that you take a week or two off work after the operation, especially if your job is physically demanding.
The risks of the surgery include pain, swelling and scarring. The risk of an infection is low, and the implant might need to be removed if it becomes damaged. A rare type of cancer, lymphoma, has been linked to breast implants. There’s also a chance that your breasts might change shape over the years, due to scar tissue or changes in your weight.
If you decide to have the operation, choose a surgeon with good reviews and a licence to perform it. Check whether the hospital or clinic is registered with your local authority’s Care Quality Commission (CQC). You can ask your GP to recommend a doctor who specialises in cosmetic surgery. You can also find information about the surgeon online and look at before-and-after photos of patients.
If you’re in England, your GP can tell you whether a private surgeon is registered with the CQC. In Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales, only certain doctors can perform cosmetic surgery. There are also rules about who can advertise it. You can also get help with the costs of a cosmetic procedure from a charity such as the Marie Curie Foundation.
